Chapter 1

Chapter 1
December 31st, 2012

The sky was clear that day. I walked out of my dorm and took in a deep breath, cherishing the smell of the freshly cut grass. I waved at a few people as I made my way to my old, beat up red car. I got inside of it and made my way to work at the local Wall to Ceiling.
The drive was boring, the traffic was exceptionally horrible that day. I put in the first C.D. I could find and put it into my C.D. player. It came on and I found myself headbanging along to the music. What happened next is still kinda blurry in my mind.
My car got hit on the passenger side. It flipped a total of five times before coming to rest against a tree.I unbuckled my seat belt and fell, hitting the ground with a thud. Several people had already rushed over to me and I could hear a siren in the back ground. The next thing I knew i fell backwards, hitting the ground with a thud.

I awoke a few hours later in a hospital room, with my little sister sitting next to my bed. She looked up and came over to me.
"You okay bro?" she asked and squeezed my arm.
"I don't think I am dead." I said and tried to sit up, but when the pain hit my I fell back down. "Did I break something?"
"No, you were badly beaten up, and there is a pretty good cut on your back and face, the one on your face needed stitches." She hugged me. "I thought I might have lost you there."
I hugged her arm and smiled at her. "Sis, it will take a hell of a lot more than a wreck to kill me."
She smiled and walked to the window. "I hate being in foster care, you know that?" She said and walked over to me. "But I have to look after you for a week okay? Doctors orders."
I nodded and smiled. Since out parents died a few years ago, she lived in foster care while I was finishing college. After I graduated later next year, I was to get a apartment and she was gonna move in with me. I swore that to her a few months back, and everything was in place to it to happen.
She smiled and took the cell phone out of her pocket. She got a huge smile on her face. "Hey you remember that James guy?"
"Yeah?" I said and forced myself to sit up.
"Well, he wants to see you tomorrow." she said and half way frowned. "You don't like him much, do ya?"
I looked her in the eyes and hesitated. I knew how much she loved this guy. "Nah, I like him, he makes you happy." but in the back of my mind I was thinking about how much I hated him.
She smiled and hugged me. "Thank you bro." she said and sat back in the chair. "The doctors are gonna be in in a bit to look at ya. I am staying her tonight."
"Shit, I can't leave till tomorrow?" I said and laid back down on the bed. "What am I supposed till then?"
"Sleep, watch T.V." she tossed me the remote. "Find a cartoon please?"
I flipped through the channels till I found this old kids show with a yellow cube guy. It distracted Tabs till I was done being poked and probed by the doctor. They gave me this weird medicine that made me go instantly asleep.

I awoke to the screams of my sister. She was shaking me and pulled me out of bed. "There are riots going on outside. The police have ordered anyone able to move to get out of the hospital. They are gonna escort us to the campus."
"Whats the cause of this?" I said as we were put into the van. My head was still swimming.
"Something about politics, like there is every four years." she said as we started through the crowds of people. "Strangely this is the only place with riots."
I nodded and pushed her head down as we made our way through the crowds of people. I didn't want her to see what was happening. There was a lot of people attack each other, and I jumped a few times when I heard gun fire.
We got to the campus and they escorted us to my room. They made us stay in the room and locked the door with something. Tabitha was watching news reports when suddenly she began to sob and scream. I ran over and saw that James was on the screen, getting attacked by several people. He was bitten by one of them and the blood sprayed the camera. A police officer came over and shot the people attacking James. He then turned to James and I heard him say "I am sorry" and shot him between the eyes.
I sat next to her and held her for a few hours. My room mate was pushed in and looked at us.
"Yo, Zack, you and Tabitha okay?" he said and stood in front of the T.V.
"Nah," I looked at my sister. "She saw someone she knew die." I looked up at him. "What's happening out there Slippy?"
"They put up these huge wall things." he showed us a picture on his phone. "This place is on lock down, no one in, no one out."
I shook my head and got Tabi into my bed so that she could sleep for a while. I walked back in and saw he had a gun in his hand.
"Why you have that dude?" I asked as he put it into a lock box.
"It's crazy out there dude, I stole it off of a guy I saw on the street." he took off his jacket and I saw that he was covered in blood and had a bite on his arm. "Some crazy bitch bit me."
It was discolored, a brownish purple color around it. He looked like he was in very intense pain.
"How long ago did it happen dude?" I asked and got a bandage for it.
"About three hours ago." he said and denied the bandage. "It stopped bleeding a hour ago."
I nodded and looked at the clock. It was 10 p.m. on the 31st. It was almost 2013, the year of recovery. I sat next to him on the couch. We were watching the news, not being able to watch any of the new years eve coverage. At midnight Slippy ran into the bathroom and threw up. I gagged at the sound of it.
I walked in from the front room and found him sitting on the floor, shaking violently. I took his temperature and it was 103 degrees. I drug him into the living room and called up the medical station on campus.
A man got on the phone with me and sent to men to come and get Slippy. They had me and Tabitha moved to a different room, one in much better shape and had better stuff in it. They sent in me and Tabitha's bags that had our cloths and some personal effects in it.
They made us both bathe with this weird soap that was very course and burned like crazy. They, after being satisfied that we were clean, left us with the explanation that it was a swine flu outbreak. They then walked out saying that we were safe.
