Chapter 4

I awoke at I think 8:30 am. Tabitha was standing next to me, looking at the gash that was no one my face. I opened my eye and she jumped back a bit.
"Bro, your eye kinda freaks me out a bit." She said and sat on her bed. "So, why is your eye red now?"
I sat up and rubbed my eyes. "Apparently I am some kind of immunity or something, I found that out yesterday." I got up and got my shirt on. "Is Krystal still here?"
"Yeah, she stayed up all night reading one of the books you brought home with you." she said and walked into the living room. "Now she is cooking, it smells yummy."
I gained my composure and walked in. Krystal had made breakfast burritos, with sausage and eggs. "Good morning sunshine." she said and handed me my plate. "Heard you met with the protectors."
"Yeah, can you tell me what the hell is going on with me?" I said and stared at her, growling in the back of my throat. "Why the hell is my eye red?"
She sat down next to me and took out the book the professor had given to me. "Basically, there was a genetic trait that a cultist group called the Sons of the Spore came up with to protect all the future generations of them. It allows for immunity from the virus in two forms, the red eye, which you have that protects you from all forms of infection minus direct bites. There is another on with pale purple eyes, that is full immunity." she stood up in front of me. "The only reason that this is obvious is that you got non defiled blood in your eye."
She then cut her finger open and sprayed the blood at Tabitha, hitting her in the left eye. I stood up and slapped her. "What the fuck is your problem lady?"
"Look at her eyes." she said and whipped the put pressure on her cut.
I stepped closer and looked at Tabitha's eye. Her left eyes was pale purple, with her other eye being gray, like normal. "Holy shit Tabi."
"What?" Krystal said and walked over to her. "Holy shit, she is immune!"
I shook my head and walked over to the book. "What the hell is the plan they have?" I then looked to Tabitha and noticed she was sitting there wide eyed. "Sorry Tabi."
"It's okay," she said and walked over to me and Krystal. "But tell me what the hell is happening."
Me and Krystal looked at each other. "She deserves to know Zack." She said and opened the book.
She pulled out a piece of paper and opened it up. "Basically, the protectors need proof to show everyone what is happening to get them on board, so they have a plan to break into the guard tower to get the codes to get into the hospital."
"Why the hospital anyway?" I said over Tabitha's head. "I heard them talking a bit about it before I was really in the room. Ain't it a safe place anyway?"
"Wrong." She said and pulled out three pictures. "They use the place to experiment with the freaks. They even kidnap people from here to use." she said and handed me the pictures.
They showed a young man being dissected. The person looked like it remained alive through the removal of his heart in the second picture. The final picture showed the man bite on of the doctors on the wrist. I recognized the young man then, they were working on Slippy.
"God damn." I said and gagged. "That is what they do to you if you are sick?"
"On some occasions yes." Krystal said and took them before Tabi could see. "They wanna get in and get proof of the infection and to kill him. They are using him as a breeder."
"Breeder?" I said and cocked my head at her. "What does that mean?"
"Well, basically, they are using him to infect other people to make more freaks for them to experiment on." she said and shook her head. "Poo bastard."
I slammed my fist on the table. "that bastard was my room mate at one time. I called the hospital, I am the reason that he is there right now."
Krystal's eyes got wide. "I am sorry Zack, I didn't know."
I shook my head. "It's fine, at least he didn't turn into what ever the hell he is here." I turned to Tabitha. "You okay sister?"
"Yep." she said and finished her burritos. "Krystal told me yesterday, I find it kinda cool."
I paused and stared at her. "You are one morbid kid, you know that?"
She smiled at me. "Thank you!" she looked at me. "I ain't a little kid you know that?" she hugged me. "You can tell me this stuff." She said and walked into her room.
I walked over to Krystal and stood in front of her. "So, she took that pretty well." I said and watched her put her MP3 player into a little speaker she got from a friend of hers. A techno metal song kicked in.
"Yeah." she said and looked up at me. "She ain't a little kid any more. I know your afraid to lose her, but you are gonna suffocate her if your not careful."
I cringed at the thought. "I know, but she is all I have left, you know. Mom died in a wreck with a semi truck, and dad killed himself a week later. I was a freshman in college, so I couldn't take her in." I lowered my head and shook it. "She has to live in foster care, and she hates it, I know that. She must hate me."
Krystal hugged me. "You know that she doesn't hate you for all that?" she asked and I shook my head no. "Well, she knew you needed to finish college. She is actually afraid of holding you back."
I walked over to the couch. "So, who do I have to contact to do this stuff?"
She shook her head. "First, you go talk with Tabitha."
I felt like I shrunk to the size of a ant. I stood and walked slowly to the room.
Tabitha turned to me. "Hey bro, what's up?" she said and turned off the music.
"Tabi, can I talk to you?" I said and motioned for her to sit on the bed.
She sat and I crouched next to her. "I am sorry I failed you sis. Since mom and dad died, I have been to protective of you without being there for you."
She slapped me hard across the face. "Shut up Zack." she said and stood up. "Cut the sit. You did not fail me!" her tone softened. "You needed to finish school. We are together now so move on." She said and walked into the front room.
I sat, on the floor, dazed for about ten minutes. I finally got up and walked into the front room. I sat in the chair next to the couch.
